Home Energy Advisor

Do you live in a house that is cold, drafty, and uncomfortable? Are your utility bills literally through the roof? If so, you could benefit from the services of a professional Home Energy Advisor.  A Home Energy Advisor is extensively trained and Government certified to provide expert unbiased advice on a wide variety of energy efficient upgrades you can consider for your home.

What can I expect?

A Home Energy Advisor will perform a thorough assessment of your home to determine where you can most benefit from upgrades to reduce heat loss and improve the efficiency and comfort of your home.  This assessment usually takes approximately 2 hours and the homeowner is provided with a detailed, customized report.  This report will have a list of recommendations that could be implemented to improve your home.

The detailed assessment report compiled by the Home Energy Advisor will suggest the most cost effective energy upgrades and it even gives an estimate of what your energy savings and payback will be when you invest in the improvements they suggest. This can be an invaluable tool for you and your renovation contractor when planning your home improvement project.

During the evaluation the Home Energy Advisor will be gathering data on a wide array of components of the home.  The dimensions and volume of the home, the amount of rough openings (doors and windows), and the orientation of the home is also considered to accommodate for solar gain.  The insulation levels of attics, walls, and basements are observed as these are common areas requiring improvement. The heating and cooling systems are examined to determine what system and fuel type would be most beneficial for the home.

The Home Energy Advisor will also perform a “blower door” test on your home. Air sealing significantly affects home performance.  Conditioned air shouldn't escape through unsealed spaces around water pipes or electrical wiring, through a gap in a door frame, a drafty window or any other unintentional opening in your building envelope. The blower door test readily identifies leakage areas and accurately calculates the ELA (estimated leakage area) of the home. The ELA is expressed in square inches and in some homes can be large enough to equal leaving a window open 24 hours a day!   Our blower door test simulates a 55 kilometer an hour wind blowing on all 4 sides of your home at once by de-pressurization. This reveals areas where conditioned air escapes. Your Total Home Advisor then does a spot-test inspection of your home, looking for areas of air leakage that an untrained eye might miss.

After you have completed the desired upgrades your Home Energy Advisor will perform a follow-up assessment of your home and will issue you an official “EnerGuide” rating label. This label displays the rating of the home on a scale of 1 to 100. The higher the rating, the more comfortable and efficient the home.

Your Home Energy Advisor is constantly staying abreast of changes in the industry, available equipment, and installation improvements. The Home Energy Advisor is a valuable resource and will help you make the right decision when it comes to equipment choices and products available to make your home comfortable, healthy, and efficient.

  • I booked an evaluation because I was planning to replace my furnace and wanted to qualify for the government rebates. The Total Home advisor that came to my home pointed out that if I added extra insulation to my attic, I would be able to receive a good amount for that as well as save money on my energy bills. I really appreciated having that information.
